opening your mind

walking in the hatchery, you see a space that instantly grabs your attention with small details from floor to ceiling. you know this space is one that is intimate, however you feel invited to be apart of it. texture of the cherry oak floor is so gleaming, that you can see your own reflection. immediately when you walk inside your welcomed with a large open area however you feel as though your wrapped up in it. its large enough to feel separated, while still feeling apart of the space. this is the performance space. however, it is only dedicated to a performance while one is on going. for the other times it is reserved to be a gallery and a seating area for guess. the space is broken my custom displays that are meant to be moved in and out of the space. however, if you had never been to a performance you would never have known they could be moved. each display whether is holds a piece of sculpture, a painting, or displays a video, each piece is custom to its art word. as you travel to the back of the store you find yourself in room that has glass on three sides. this is the collaboration room. its meant to be glass to keep the insipration in the store moving freely throughout the space. in that space you can smell the aroma of coffee close by. there is a coffee bar in the center of the space to make easy access in the store. when buying something in the store, you check out at a counter located next to the coffee bar. its located there because the store needs to be about the design taking place throughout the hatchery, not the business.

the hatchery: ideas

for the hatchery i looked up various words and wound my way to trees for a concept. trees have so many aspects to them. there are over a 100,000 different kinds of species, also many of those species go through changes throughout the year. there are various types of trees which is why i was so drawn to the concept.

this is a spacial diagram for the store the hatchery. this is used to show space requirements within the store and relation to what space should be close to another.

inventory investigation

this store has the possibility of selling and a multitude amount of things. with every creative department at uncg being a possible option for selling goods, it opens a variety of things to be sold.

at the end of every semester there is critiques in both iarc and the art department. specifically in the art department, there are always art hanging from the wall. these without a doubt could be hung in the store instead of sitting in the empty hallways. this would give a chance for the customers to see a side of uncg as well as decorate parts of the space.

uncg also has a wonderful music department. also at the end of every semester there is recitals for musicians as well. not only could you sell possible cd's made my students, but you could play there music in the store.

there is also a department at uncg that designs clothing or clothing apparel. its called the cars department. obviously their clothing or clothing designs could be sold there. students would design the clothing themselves and would be sold as if it were a clothing apparel store.

what makes this store so amazing is the collection of creative minds. selling all these different kinds of things really opens up the possibilities of endless amounts items. what also is so good about this store is with ever new class coming in, there will be a new amount of items coming in as well.

the hatchery

our precedent research for the hatchery involves finding any kind of location or environment that shares qualities that identify with the proposed hatchery. i collected photos both that have taken myself and that i found searching in the internet for environments that fit the qualities i can foresee the hatchery having.

here i used a subway and an airport. the hatchery is going to a place of coming and going. i love the feeling of coming to a new place and experiencing something new so i really could see this new space having this feel.

the hatchery is located right in the center of the city of greensboro. the city has a vintage old city feel. most of the buildings are remodeled now but there is still a old style feel to the city. here these pictures are on old style that is still being remodeled.

i love traveling. its a passion of mine. there is no city like florence. so many stores are holes in the wall of the small italian streets. they feel so welcoming. its the exact feeling i want the hatchery to have

here is some small coffee shops that really show the cozy feel im envisioning. there also the "hole in the wall" feeling i really want to hatchery to achieve.

this is princeton's basketball gym. its like no other gym in the nation. the simply the lighting in the gym cause you to say wow. i honestly dont know where this could fit in to the hatchery but this space is just unlike any other i thought i would put it in.

window displays

using inspirations from either our own blogs or other blogs, we were to design a rough concept/idea of what could be the possible window installations in the salvation army select store.this display uses the contrast of white and red. here i designed simply shapes to work off one another forming negative and positive space. selecting only a few blocks to be highlighted red is to draw the attention to those areas.
i envisioned tight metal wires to be strung from top to bottom of the front windows. in the middle of the display would be a wire cut out of a shield. the wires would be tied off to the shield was well.here the shapes in the window are meant to create a "wall" or "backdrop" for the store front display. colors here were important. they are meant to be playful while drawingProxy-Connection: keep-alive

inspiration

finding inspiration comes from where you can find it. our task was to find inspiration from anything for salvation army select. i started simply drawing this set of shapes. i really began to appreciate it and my ideas ran from there. i began to think of sets of stones or masonry work. how shapes contour other shapes and the positive and negative spaces between the solid pieces. it makes my eyes really explore the shapes and sizes of the pieces. i also like the idea of using natural pieces. using stones or some other natural material in a creative way i think usually gives great results.

salvation army select

our task was to figure ways to market the opening salvation army select. it could be anyway in which you could market your idea. here are some of mine:

seeing something over and over again really gets my attention. here i thought of making a sign most likely out of a material that can with stand weather. then posting these signs randomly all over greensboro. a bright red would grab the persons attention. intriguing people is the goal here.

working hand in hand with the signs i would place these "s" circles also around town. these would be the information for the signs that people have been seeing around town. it would be similar in the fact it would be bright red with the words "open". looking inside the sticker would show you various information possibly a website or something like that.

time piece

our project was to design a time piece with-in our store that spoke to the essential qualities of our conceptual framework. it didnt have to be a literal clock or watch but something that represented time. here was my interpretations

here was my first exploration. this design doesnt tell time but rather shows time through movement. its located on the floor of my store and is intertwined within the orange lines traveling throughout the store. the black path will have a pulsing beat of light traveling around the "track" roughly every second.
this is a more literal exploration. its located on the floor with no elevation pieces. there are grooves in the floor that a orange orbe of light will travel through like the hands of a clock. you will be able to see the lights because the grooves are covered with a solid slate of thick glass.
this final piece is the one i took the most strech on. there is a toy that little kids play with where you take wood pieces and slide them along a wires. well that is where i got my inspiration. i wanted to show time rather then tell it. these pieces would site on tracks on the ceiling and travel back and fourth throughout the store. various sizes are mixed and match on the same tracks.

this is what you get when you combine motherboard + hats + bags. i envision the space being sleek and glossy. the use of hard materials seemed to fit my concept well. i wanted to use minimal colors yet have very strong accent colors. that is where my bright orange and teal came in. i felt they gave a strong balance to the white and gray. i envision the orange and teal lines going throughout the store not only as way finding, but also being used in display cases and the the products themselves. most of the materials are metal or plastic gloss. the name filter comes more from the products than the concept. the products themselves are sleek high class hats and bags and i felt the name would give a good anaology of what the products represent.

our new project was to design a materials board. not your average picking materials and gluing them on a piece of paper, but rather incorporate images and your concept and find a way to make them mesh together. my concept was motherboard. which is the main part of a computer, and my products are hats and bags....not exactly a match made in heaven. well see where this one goes

some retail you feel that they are selling to the more general public. walking into old navy i felt that immediately. it was a space with much less color and materials than others. i felt that there was more of a general selection of clothing rather than a specific style.

in some retail stores you get a sense of the clothing they sell by the space that they are designed in. hollister is a great example of that. the store is designed like a beach house, and they brand is selling to that group.
dsw is a large shoe store. when you walk into the space you enter a large warehouse style building. however, this sketch is taken of the area located in the back of the space. it is interesting because this space given the feel of a completely seperate area. they use drop down lighing and change of materials to change the customers sence of space.

bear rock cafe does a great job of personalizing a space. in their store they use a good amount of natural material and colors to make the space feel very cozy and warm. using this style it makes the user feel as though the space has been customized for their very own comfort.

this sketch took place in a toy store. it was very interesting how they carved this space out of the massive amount of toys on the shelves. in this space there was a large amount of cludder, but it somewhat organized. it reminded me of a toy room on a person's house where only the toys for the kids stayed.

daylight model

our objective for this project was to pick an artist for our inspiration, then with that design a daylight model. our model would use the light of the sun to make shadows or experiences within a model no less than 26" by 15". eero saarinen's mit chapel was our inspiration.
in the mit chapel eero uses little metal pieces to reflect the light traveling into the space, in our model we used the same concept yet with a twist. we took the metal pieces and placed them on the walls of the model and cut slits into the ceils that sit at a 45 degree angle to allow the light to come in. the slits are also from eero's design were he used a type of that at the bottom of the mit chapel to allow light to come in.

light series III

lighting series three's objective is to observe fabrics in different places. the locations in which we were ask to record the lighting change in the fabrics was a grocery store, a retail store, a residence, and a library. after photoing the fabrics in each place we were then asked to examine the change in color and light in each place.

grocery store
here the fabrics are hit with a florscent light. with that light, it blends the purple and blue fabric to almost the same color. while the cream fabric turns almost to white. its obvious that the lights in the store play little to the color. these lighting conditions obviously dont support a colorful environment.

librarythe library shows a very different light compared to the grocery stores florscent lights. in the library the lights have a much more warm color as you immediately walk in. these lights help show the color of the fabrics and seperate the shade of purple from the shade of blue fabric. also the brown turn much more gold while the cream takes on a hint of yellow.

retail store
the retail store also shows the colors of the fabric very well as it should. this retail store sells clothing and to have the lighting in the store distort the color of the clothes could cause a lot of headaches. i believe that this lighting shows the colors the best and in there honest state. these colors appear as they were made to appear and dont give off some other sort of shade.

residence

the residence lighting doesnt show much consideration to the colors of the fabric as well. much of the lighting in this residence is incondescent lighting which doesnt provide much help when considering fabric colors. however, this room is perticularly open with alot of windows located in it, so the designer may have had the idea that this room would be receiveing more natural light then artificial.

light series II

light series two was to take pictures of a museum, a restaurant, and a retail store. our objective was to record the lighting fixtures of each space and report and the lighting throughout the place.

an art museum
the museum i visited was the weatherspoon museum. this gallery has a very interesting play on the light throughout the space. the picture above located directly in the enterence of the museum. this large open space in the enterence has recessed windows located at the top of the large opening. this offers a great amount of light to be let in the space, while also allowing the light flow into a window over looking the large gap. other types of artifical lighting includes lots of track lighting provided for the art located in the area.

a restaurant

the restaurant i visted was pf changs. this place offers great amounts of different types of lighting that provides the visitor with great experiences in the restaurant. as you walk in, you are welcomed by great dimed yet comfortable lighing. lighing that allows you to see comfortably yet also feel calm and comfortable. over each table is dropped down lighting and throught the restaurant is beatiful dim circles that guide you through the space.

a retail space
the retail space i visited was hollister. this space is a very interesting view on how a store uses lights to sell clothes. throughout the space, the only thing that is lit is the clothes. this offers a lot of glare if you walk through the light concentrated on the clothes. however, this does make your attention go on the clothes and make you move through the space on not stay standing still in the dark.

lighting evalutaion

our group had decided to evaluate a room that we believed had a lighting situation that changed throughout the day. we decided on the crit space. this space offers a dynamic
difference in lighting during the day and night. with the skylight above the space, it offers little lighing control. during the night it also offers something a senario of not enough light, with the only light coming from track light.

our assignment was to explore light anyway we wanted to in a 12x12x12 box. our idea was to look at color used in light as well as material. the material used is tin foil.

Lighting Inspirations

i chose certain situations of light which ever rooms will see. i loved the natural light of each situation. being able to take advantage of those lighting situations to the best of my design ability has the capability taking lighting design to a very interesting place.
